A Texas teen is waking up in a hospital bed with a body that doesn’t look the same.
Ramon Barreto is only 18.
He just graduated high school in Ennis, TX.
He celebrated his 18th birthday less than a month ago.
Now, his right hand and forearm are gone.
And his family says it happened in a matter of seconds.
Ramon was riding as a passenger in a dirt bike with friends near Ferris, Texas, when it crashed.
His right arm became trapped beneath the machine, causing massive blood loss and devastating injuries.
His friends jumped into action, lifting the heavy Razor off him and putting pressure on his arm until emergency crews arrived.
Ramon was rushed to a Dallas hospital.
Doctors spent hours in surgery trying to save his arm.
They couldn’t.
After three surgeries, Ramon survived, but doctors had to amputate his right hand and forearm.
His godmother, Iris, reached out to me hoping we could surround him with support as he begins a recovery that will extend far beyond this hospital room.
She tells me Ramon faces rehabilitation, physical therapy, chronic pain and eventually learning to use a prosthetic.
Think about being 18 and suddenly having to relearn things you’ve done without thinking your entire life.
His prognosis for survival is positive.
But emotionally and physically, his family knows this is just the beginning.
Iris told me prayers are especially important right now because Ramon needs strength as he begins looking forward and adjusting to a life he never expected.
