The investigation into the Ohio family accused of keeping 16 children in horrific living conditions has taken another disturbing turn after court records and newly reported evidence revealed that concerns surrounding the family may have existed years before authorities discovered the children inside the Hamden home

On June 30, 2026, investigators searching the residence in connection with an unrelated investigation reportedly discovered 16 children ranging from about 18 months to 18 years old living in extremely poor conditions. Four adults — Elizabeth Siders, Gary Siders Jr., Gary Siders Sr. and Christina Siders — were arrested and each charged with 16 counts of felony child endangerment. All four have pleaded not guilty.

But the latest revelations raise a much bigger question:

One of the most significant developments comes from 2021 court records.

According to records obtained by Oxygen, six of the Siders children were reportedly the subject of truancy complaints after allegedly missing school for the entire academic year up to that point.

The complaints described the children as habitual truants, and authorities reportedly attempted to serve the parents with court summonses.

But deputies allegedly found the family’s home vacant when they attempted to serve the paperwork.

The truancy case was ultimately terminated in January 2022 because of the defendants’ reported unavailability.

That revelation has intensified questions about whether the children’s prolonged isolation could have been detected years earlier.
