She lost Darby Kate 13 years ago. Three weeks ago, she had to say goodbye again, this time to her 15-year-old son, Will.
When the family decided to move Darby Kate so she could rest beside Will at the small cemetery in Ralph, Alabama, she chose not to witness the process.
She waited until the little casket had been placed back into the ground, the earth had been filled in, and everything was back in place before she walked over.
Because the image of Will being taken off the airplane was still burned into her mind, she knew her heart didn’t need to carry another painful memory.
She only wanted to see one final thing:
Darby Kate had returned to Will’s side.
She tried to protect herself from another painful memory. She only wanted the final image from that day to be her two children together.
