MIDDLESBROUGH, ENGLAND — The families of two Cleveland Police officers killed in a devastating A66 collision have shared emotional tributes as investigators continue examining the circumstances surrounding the crash that claimed seven lives.

PC Matthew Blades, 37, and PC Tom Clough, 38, were killed in the early hours of Saturday, August 22, when a Volkswagen Passat traveling against the normal flow of traffic collided head-on with their marked Cleveland Police Armed Response Vehicle near South Bank.

All five people inside the Passat also lost their lives in the collision.

Matthew Blades’ wife described him as a devoted husband and father whose family meant everything to him.

🚔 The Crash Happened at 3:39 a.m.
The collision occurred at approximately 3:39 a.m. on August 22 on the A66 at South Bank.

According to Cleveland Police, the Volkswagen Passat was traveling the wrong way along the dual carriageway when it collided with the police vehicle, which was traveling on the correct side of the road.

The impact was fatal for everyone involved.

The two officers and all five occupants of the Passat were pronounced dead at the scene.

🚨 A Police Pursuit Came Before the Collision
The circumstances became even more complicated because the Passat had reportedly been involved in a police pursuit shortly before the crash.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct said officers had been pursuing a suspicious vehicle before the pursuit was brought to an end.

Importantly, the police vehicle carrying Blades and Clough was not the vehicle involved in that pursuit.

The officers were traveling separately when the Passat entered their path.

The watchdog is examining the events surrounding the pursuit and the decisions made before the collision.

Five Other Families Are Also Mourning
The tragedy was not limited to the two officers.

The five people traveling inside the Volkswagen Passat were also killed.

They were identified as:

Cole Robert Worthy, 17; Theo Rae, 17; Makai Saddington, 18; Michael Robert Cahill, 23; and Jacob Matusiak, 23.

Their families are also receiving support as investigators work to establish what happened before the collision.
