Born Without Arms or Legs, Tiyo Satrio Learned to Write With His Mouth and Play Video Games With His Chin

Tiyo Satrio was born without arms or legs, a rare congenital condition that his mother did not know about until after delivery. In a village in Ciamis, West Java, Indonesia, he grew up needing help to dress, wash and move — and still found ways to keep up at school and to play.

His parents, Mimi and Wawan, live in Panawangan (also spelled Penawangan). Mimi has said the midwife told her the birth was normal. Only the next day did she learn that her youngest of five children had no limbs. The family adjusted. Tiyo learned to unwrap sweets with his mouth, to write by holding a pen in his teeth, and to operate a PlayStation controller with his chin and shoulder. Classmates and teachers at SLB Firdaus, a special school, pushed his wheelchair. His principal described a high IQ: in second grade he could already handle fourth-grade mathematics, including multiplication and division. He also did well in religious studies.

He is not independent in the ordinary sense. Daily care falls on his parents, who have said they cannot both work because someone must stay with him. State support, they told reporters in 2016, had stopped. What he does have is persistence and an easy laugh that made him a favourite in class. When he first resisted school out of embarrassment, that circle of help and his own stubbornness brought him back.

International coverage in 2016 — photographs of a boy writing with his mouth, gaming after his bath, riding to school on the family motorbike — turned a local story into a wider one. Later videos from his community still show him using a phone and taking part in daily religious routines. The details that endure are simple: a child born without limbs who insisted on schoolwork and play, and a family that treated those things as possible.

His condition set hard limits. His response was to use what he had.
