PAWLEYS ISLAND, SOUTH CAROLINA — The desperate search for 5-year-old Saylor Hayes has ended in tragedy, and now the investigation has taken an even more painful turn: her parents have been arrested and accused of putting their daughter at an unreasonable risk of harm.

Saylor, a severely nonverbal autistic girl from Bristol, Virginia, disappeared Sunday after wandering away from the vacation rental where her family was staying in Pawleys Island.

The following morning, search crews found her body in the water near the area where she had disappeared.

Authorities say the investigation that followed led them to Saylor’s own parents.

💔 A CHILD WHO NEEDED EXTRA PROTECTION
Saylor was not an ordinary missing-child case.

According to the arrest warrants, she was severely nonverbal, autistic, had a known tendency to wander and had a strong attraction to water.

Because of those risks, Saylor had been enrolled in Project Lifesaver, a program designed to help authorities locate people who may wander away because of cognitive or developmental conditions.

She had been part of the program since June 2024.

The system relies on a small transmitter attached to the person, allowing trained search personnel to track an individualized radio signal if that person goes missing.

But when Saylor disappeared in South Carolina, investigators could not find that signal.

They would eventually discover why.

🚨 THE TRACKING DEVICE WASN’T WITH HER
According to the warrants, Saylor’s monitoring device had been removed before the family left Virginia.

Authorities later found the transmitter inside a vehicle at the family’s home in Bristol.

Washington County Sheriff Blake Andis said the equipment itself worked exactly as designed when deputies searched for Saylor’s assigned frequency.

The problem was that Saylor was not wearing it.

Investigators say the device’s band must be physically cut to remove it.

That detail has become one of the central issues in the criminal investigation because of how vulnerable Saylor was known to be.

🔎 SEARCH TEAMS LOOKED EVERYWHERE
Once Saylor was reported missing, a massive search operation began.

Hundreds of people and multiple agencies joined the effort, searching by land and water.

Authorities used drones, divers and other resources as rescuers tried to find the little girl before it was too late.

The location itself created an additional danger.

Saylor had been reported missing near a waterway, and investigators later recovered her body from the water near Hagley Landing.

The search ended with the discovery no parent ever wants to hear.

⚠️ AUTHORITIES SAY THE SEARCH WAS ALSO MISDIRECTED
The arrest warrants contain another disturbing allegation.

Investigators say Saylor’s parents encouraged searchers to use the tracking technology despite knowing that Saylor was no longer wearing the transmitter.

Authorities also allege the parents directed search efforts away from a nearby body of water where investigators believe Saylor had been left without adequate supervision.

Those allegations are now part of the criminal case against the couple.

They have not been convicted, and the accusations contained in arrest warrants have not yet been proven in court.

👮 HER PARENTS WERE ARRESTED IN TENNESSEE
Saylor’s parents, John Herb Hayes III, 70, and Geordyn Nichole Hayes, 31, were arrested Tuesday in Carter County, Tennessee.

Each faces charges of unlawfully placing a child at risk and willfully abandoning a child in connection with Saylor’s disappearance and death.

The two were being held in Tennessee while they awaited proceedings to return them to Georgetown County, South Carolina.

Authorities have not announced that either parent has been charged with intentionally killing Saylor.

That distinction matters.

The case currently centers on allegations that they failed to provide appropriate supervision and safeguards for a child with significant known vulnerabilities.

🕯️ “SHE DESERVED TO BE SAFE”
Georgetown County Sheriff Carter Weaver said the investigation followed the evidence wherever it led.

He described Saylor as a vulnerable child who depended on the adults responsible for protecting her.

His message was blunt: Saylor deserved to be safe and protected.

That statement captures the heart of the investigation.

Authorities are not simply trying to determine how Saylor entered the water. They are examining the circumstances that put her in a position where she could disappear in the first place.
