AN 11-YEAR-OLD LEFT HOME ON HIS BIKE FOR SCHOOL. HE NEVER ARRIVED.

Wednesday morning should have been ordinary.

Torren O’Grady, 11, a sixth grader, left home on his bicycle for North Stonington Elementary School in Connecticut. Students had been back only five days. He should have seen his friends, sat through class, and come home.

He never made it there.

State police say Torren was riding less than a mile from the school, traveling east on Old Colony Road behind a school bus. As the bus turned left onto Pinecrest Road, his bicycle collided with the front left wheel. Police later described what followed as a “run-over event.”

Torren died from his injuries.

The bus driver, a 76-year-old man, was not hurt. Investigators asked for witnesses and video. The school sent students home early and brought in counselors. A town that had just started a new year was suddenly trying to explain an empty desk.

Torren was also No. 49 for the Stonington Bears youth lacrosse team.

That number is now traveling farther than the field. His lacrosse family asked people to leave a stick outside and keep a porch light on. “Let every porch light shine for Torren,” the tribute says. “Let every lacrosse stick remind his family that they are surrounded by a community standing beside them in love and support.”

Programs and families across Connecticut have joined in — putting sticks on porches for a child many of them never met. State Sen. Heather Somers shared the same request and wrote the sentence that holds the whole loss:

“A child left home to go to school and should have come home again.”

The tribute is almost painfully simple. A porch light. A lacrosse stick. A boy’s number: 49.

For a family staring at a bike that will not be ridden again, those lights are a way of saying their son mattered — and that people are grieving with them.

Tonight, one more light on the porch is not too small a thing.
