A devastating case in Sheffield has taken another major legal turn after four people accused of murdering a newborn baby girl were formally scheduled to stand trial next year.

The infant, identified in court only as Baby S, was discovered at a property in the Wincobank area of Sheffield, South Yorkshire. Prosecutors allege that the newborn had suffered multiple stab wounds before her body was found on top of a washing machine.

The case has shocked the local community, while a series of serious charges against those accused have raised difficult questions about what happened inside the property and what followed afterward.

Four People Accused of Murder

The four defendants facing the murder charge are Andrea Skopova, 20; Peter Horvath Jr, 19; Peter Horvath Sr, 38; and Nina Horvathova, 37.

All four are Slovakian nationals and have been charged with the murder of Baby S.

According to evidence previously heard by the magistrates’ court, the newborn suffered 33 wounds during 15 separate stabbings. The injuries reportedly included wounds to the baby’s face and torso, affecting both the front and back of her body.

The allegations are among the most serious possible in British criminal law, but it is important to stress that all four defendants remain accused rather than convicted. Their guilt or innocence will ultimately be determined through the court process.

A Discovery That Triggered the Investigation

The baby’s body was discovered on Sunday at an address in Wincobank.

The circumstances surrounding the discovery quickly prompted a major police investigation. Investigators were faced not only with determining how the newborn died, but also with establishing who was present, what happened inside the property and whether anyone attempted to interfere with the investigation afterward.

Prosecutors have alleged that the scene was subsequently cleaned.

That allegation has resulted in additional charges against the four defendants, including causing or allowing the death of a child and perverting the course of justice.

The latter charge relates to the alleged cleaning of the scene, which prosecutors say was an attempt to interfere with the investigation into the baby’s death.

A Fifth Defendant Appears in Court

The latest hearing involved more than the four people accused of murder.

A 15-year-old girl also appeared at Sheffield Crown Court after being charged with perverting the course of justice. Because of her age, she cannot legally be named.

All five defendants appeared in the glass-fronted dock during Thursday’s hearing. Seven security guards and two Slovak interpreters were present in the courtroom.

Members of the defendants’ family were also in attendance, with 26 relatives watching proceedings from the public gallery.

The emotional nature of the hearing was particularly apparent as Andrea Skopova and the teenage defendant were reported to have cried throughout the proceedings.

Court Sets Trial for April 2027

Judge Sarah Wright has now set the murder trial to begin on 12 April 2027.

The proceedings are expected to last between six and seven weeks, reflecting the seriousness and complexity of the allegations.

Until then, the defendants will remain in custody. Their next scheduled hearing is due to take place on 2 October 2026.

The lengthy gap before trial means investigators and prosecutors will have additional time to prepare the evidence that will eventually be presented before a jury.

The Family Connections Add Another Layer

The relationships between the defendants have also become an important part of the case.

Andrea Skopova, the baby’s mother, is the girlfriend of Peter Horvath Jr.

Horvath Jr is also the son of Peter Horvath Sr and Nina Horvathova, meaning the four murder defendants are connected through the same family and relationship network.

The baby’s father remains unknown, according to prosecutor Luke Hopkinson. Prosecutors told the court that he is not believed to be Peter Horvath Jr.

These relationships could become significant as the prosecution attempts to establish the circumstances surrounding Baby S’s death and determine the alleged involvement of each individual.

Two Other Women Remain on Bail

The investigation has not ended with the four murder charges.

Two other women, aged 26 and 37, remain on bail after being arrested on suspicion of murder.

Their continued status indicates that investigators may still be examining the wider circumstances surrounding the baby’s death.

Whether either woman will eventually face charges could depend on the evidence gathered as the investigation progresses.

Questions That Will Have to Be Answered

The case leaves a number of major questions that will ultimately have to be addressed in court.

Who inflicted the fatal injuries?

What happened to Baby S immediately before her death?

Were other people present when the alleged stabbing occurred?

Why was the baby’s body allegedly left on top of a washing machine?

And perhaps most importantly, what happened inside the property after the newborn was killed?

The prosecution will need to establish the individual roles of the defendants and prove the allegations against them to the required criminal standard.

The defense teams, meanwhile, will have the opportunity to challenge the prosecution’s evidence and present their own arguments.

A Case Now Heading Toward a Major Trial

For Baby S, the upcoming trial will be about more than determining criminal responsibility. It will be an attempt to reconstruct the final moments of a newborn whose life ended before it had barely begun.

For investigators, the months leading up to April 2027 will be critical as evidence continues to be examined.

For the defendants, the stakes could hardly be higher.

And for the wider community, the unanswered questions surrounding Baby S’s death are unlikely to disappear while the case remains unresolved.

The next significant stage will come in October, when the defendants return to court. But the central questions surrounding the newborn’s death may not receive their full examination until the murder trial begins in April next year.
