Newborn Found in a Ditch on the Solano–Varela Border Is Stabilized After Neighbors’ Rescue

On the edge of Florencio Varela and San Francisco Solano, in Buenos Aires Province, a person left a bundle in a ditch beside tall grass and walked away. Minutes later, passersby heard a faint cry from the undergrowth. Opening the bag, they found a newborn — hours old, according to reports — inside a cloth shopping bag. Some accounts said the handle was twisted around the baby’s neck. Remnants of the umbilical cord were still present. It was a cold, windy night.

Karina and her daughter, who were walking near Avenida Monteverde between streets 886 and 887 in Villa La Florida, followed the sound. They lifted the infant, called 911 and stayed with him until patrol officers arrived. Hospital staff later said neighbors and police brought the boy in about 11:30 p.m.

He was taken to Hospital Dr. Eduardo Oller in Solano. Neonatology teams treated him for exposure and possible hypothermia, checked vital signs and started supportive care. Doctors said he weighed about 3.7 kilograms (8.2 pounds), was stable and out of immediate danger. He remained in the neonatal unit under observation. Local media identified him as Francisco.

Security cameras recorded someone leaving the bag in the ditch. Prosecutors opened a case of abandonment. Municipal officials visited the hospital. Custody and protection were placed under judicial authority.

The rescue, neighbors and hospital said, came in time.
