A Nation Remembers PC Matthew Blades at Emotional Funeral in Hartlepool

Hundreds of police officers and members of the public gathered in Hartlepool on September 9 to pay their respects to PC Matthew Blades, a 37-year-old Cleveland Police officer who died in the A66 collision.

Outside St Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, officers from police forces across the UK stood together to honor a colleague remembered not only for his service, but also as a husband, father and valued member of his community.

Police standard bearers joined the procession as Blades’ Union Flag-draped coffin was carried into the church. Many officers and members of the public stood in silence as they paid tribute to a life dedicated to helping others.

Blades died on August 22 alongside fellow Cleveland Police officer PC Tom Clough, 38. Their marked patrol vehicle was involved in a collision with a Volkswagen Passat travelling in the opposite direction on the A66. Five people in the other vehicle also died, bringing the total number of fatalities to seven.

The funeral focused not only on the circumstances of the collision, but on the person behind the uniform.

Blades was remembered as a devoted father of two and an armed-response officer. He had also recently become involved in youth football coaching at Seaton Carew FC, reflecting his connection with the local community.

His family described him as a beloved husband, best friend and dedicated father. Friends and colleagues remembered his commitment to both his family and his work.

Four mounted officers accompanied the cortege, while bagpipes and drums formed part of the ceremonial farewell. “Amazing Grace” was played as the coffin entered the church.

Officers from different forces stood together throughout the service, reflecting the strong sense of solidarity within the policing community.

The wider A66 tragedy has had a significant impact on the region, with Cleveland Police also responding to subsequent public-order and criminal-justice concerns in the area.

But during the funeral, attention returned to Matthew Blades himself—a police officer, husband, father and community member whose life had touched many people.

As colleagues and members of the public gathered to remember him, the ceremony provided an opportunity to honor his service and support his family during an extremely difficult time.
