A Christiansburg, Virginia, man has been sentenced to 35 years in prison following his conviction in a violent hotel-room attack involving a woman who had gone there intending to end their relationship.

Joseph Nathan Penn was sentenced Wednesday in Montgomery County Circuit Court after being found guilty earlier this year of multiple offenses stemming from the October 2025 incident.

The court imposed a total sentence of 50 years, but 15 years were suspended, leaving Penn with 35 years of active prison time. He will also be subject to 10 years of probation after his release and will be required to register as a sex offender.

THE OCTOBER 2025 HOTEL INCIDENT
According to prosecutors, the case began on October 23, 2025, when Sarah Isley went to a Budget Inn in Christiansburg to end her relationship with Penn.

What happened inside the hotel room became the central evidence in the criminal case.

Prosecutors said Penn attacked Isley, punching her, throwing her to the floor and strangling her. Authorities said he prevented her from leaving the room and later held a knife against her throat, causing a small cut.

The prosecution also alleged that Penn attempted to restrain Isley with a rope before sexually assaulting her.

During the trial, Isley testified about the incident and told the court that she believed she might not leave the room alive.

The allegations resulted in charges involving abduction, strangulation, assault and battery, destruction of property and animate-object sexual penetration.

THE VICTIM EVENTUALLY REACHED POLICE
According to prosecutors, Isley was eventually allowed to leave the hotel.

She drove directly to the Christiansburg Police Department, where she reported what had happened.

Officers then arrested Penn shortly after he exited the hotel room.

Police said Penn was carrying a knife when he was taken into custody.

Forensic testing later became an important part of the prosecution’s case. Investigators determined that the knife contained DNA belonging to Isley, according to prosecutors.

Investigators also recovered the rope that prosecutors said had been used during the incident.

But one of the most significant pieces of evidence came from Penn’s own phone.

VIDEO BECAME KEY EVIDENCE
Prosecutors said Penn had recorded himself holding the knife against Isley’s throat.

Investigators recovered the video from his phone and presented it as evidence during the case.

The recording, along with the knife, DNA evidence and testimony from the victim, formed part of the evidence presented to the court.

The case was prosecuted by Montgomery County Commonwealth’s Attorney Patrick Jensen.

CONVICTION CAME MONTHS BEFORE SENTENCING
Penn was convicted on May 20, 2026, following a trial.

His convictions included animate-object sexual penetration, abduction, strangulation, assault and battery, and destruction of property.

At sentencing, the judge imposed:

35 years for animate-object sexual penetration — active prison time
10 years for abduction — suspended
5 years for strangulation — suspended
That resulted in 35 years of active incarceration.

The sentence also includes a requirement that Penn complete 10 years of probation after his release.

He must additionally register as a sex offender.

PROTECTIVE ORDER ISSUED
The court also issued a lifetime protective order prohibiting Penn from contacting Isley.

The order provides an additional legal restriction following the criminal conviction and sentencing.

The case illustrates how evidence gathered during the immediate police response, forensic testing and digital evidence from a defendant’s own phone can become central to a prosecution.

In this case, authorities said the knife recovered after Penn’s arrest was linked to the victim through forensic testing, while the video recovered from his phone documented part of the confrontation.

A 35-YEAR SENTENCE
Penn’s sentencing brings the criminal proceedings to a major stage nearly a year after the October 2025 hotel incident.

Although the court imposed a total sentence of 50 years, 15 years were suspended. Penn therefore faces 35 years of active incarceration.

Following that prison term, he is scheduled to serve 10 years of probation and remain subject to sex-offender registration requirements.

The lifetime protective order will also remain in place.

The case was heard in Montgomery County Circuit Court, where Penn was convicted earlier this year after prosecutors presented testimony and physical and digital evidence related to the hotel-room incident.
