PART 4: The Woman They Chose to Sacrifice

At 11:47 p.m., Graham Vance returned to his parents’ waterfront mansion.

The anniversary decorations were still hanging beneath the striped canopy.

The champagne glasses remained on the tables.

But the forty-two guests were gone.

Only five people waited inside the house.

His father.

His mother.

Caleb Sutter.

Brent Halley.

And Adrian.

The brother Graham had buried eleven years earlier.

Graham entered the dining room carrying a black briefcase.

Walter Vance stood beside the fireplace.

“You came alone.”

“Where is Natalie?”

Walter looked at the briefcase.

“First, the evidence.”

Graham ignored him.

“Where is my wife?”

Adrian stepped forward.

“Graham.”

Graham turned.

For a moment, neither brother spoke.

Then Graham crossed the room and struck him.

Adrian stumbled against the table.

“Eleven years,” Graham said.

Adrian wiped blood from his lip.

“I know.”

“Eleven years I thought you were dead.”

“I had no choice.”

“You had a daughter.”

Adrian froze.

Graham saw the change immediately.

“You didn’t know?”

Adrian looked toward Walter.

His father said nothing.

Graham laughed without humor.

“You didn’t even know they were using your own child.”

Adrian moved toward Walter.

“What child?”

Walter raised a hand.

“Enough.”

But Adrian was no longer listening.

“Father. What child?”

Walter’s expression hardened.

“Rachel Bell was supposed to remain quiet.”

Adrian went completely still.

“Rachel?”

Graham watched his brother understand.

For the first time that evening, Adrian looked genuinely terrified.

“What did you do to Rachel?”

Walter said nothing.

Then Elaine Vance entered the room.

She was still wearing her anniversary pearls.

“Your father didn’t do anything to Rachel.”

All three men turned.

Elaine looked at Graham.

“I did.”

Silence fell.

Graham stared at his mother.

Elaine calmly removed her earrings.

“Rachel contacted me last month. She wanted money and protection for the child. I told her we would discuss it.”

“Where is she?” Adrian demanded.

“Safe.”

“Where?”

Elaine looked toward Brent.

“Ask him.”

Brent’s smile disappeared.

For the first time, he looked uncertain.

Graham understood something then.

The people in this room were not working together.

They were watching one another.

Waiting for someone to make the first mistake.

“Where’s Natalie?” Graham repeated.

Elaine turned toward him.

“Upstairs.”

Graham moved toward the staircase.

Caleb stepped into his path.

“Not yet.”

Graham stared at his security chief.

“You told me she was safe after the shooting.”

“She was.”

“You watched her get hurt.”

Caleb looked away.

“You knew.”

No answer.

Graham took another step.

“Did you know Brent hit her?”

Caleb’s jaw tightened.

“Yes.”

Graham struck him.

Caleb fell against the wall.

Brent reached for his gun.

“Careful.”

Graham turned slowly.

“You touched my wife.”

Brent smiled.

“She should have given me what I asked for.”

“And what was that?”

“The original files.”

Graham lifted the briefcase.

“These?”

Brent nodded.

Graham placed it on the table.

Walter approached.

“Open it.”

Graham obeyed.

Inside was a laptop.

He turned it on.

A video began playing.

The screen showed the restaurant on September 29.

But this was not the surveillance footage Natalie had recovered.

This recording came from inside the restaurant’s private office.

Walter Vance stood beside Brent.

Caleb waited near the door.

Walter’s voice was unmistakable.

“Make sure Graham leaves before the window breaks.”

Brent answered.

“And Natalie?”

Walter hesitated.

Then said:

“She knows too much. She stays.”

Graham felt the room tilt.

His father had ordered the attack.

Not to kill him.

To silence Natalie.

But the recording continued.

Caleb spoke.

“She won’t be alone. Graham changed his reservation.”

Walter slammed his hand against the desk.

“Then fix it.”

The screen went black.

Graham looked up.

“You knew she would be there.”

Walter said nothing.

“You were willing to let her die.”

Elaine stepped forward.

“Graham, your father made a terrible decision.”

“A terrible decision?”

His voice rose.

“He tried to murder my wife!”

“Lower your voice,” Walter ordered.

Graham laughed.

For forty-one years, those three words had controlled him.

Not tonight.

“Where is she?”

A door opened above them.

Natalie appeared at the top of the staircase.

Her wrists were tied.

A bruise darkened her cheek.

Brent’s accomplice stood behind her with a gun.

“Graham!”

He started toward her.

The man raised his weapon.

“Stay back.”

Walter pointed at the laptop.

“Delete the files.”

Graham looked at Natalie.

She shook her head almost imperceptibly.

He understood.

He pressed a key.

The screen displayed:

DELETING ARCHIVE.

Walter exhaled.

Brent lowered his gun.

Then a voice came through the laptop speakers.

“Evidence successfully transmitted.”

Everyone froze.

A second message appeared.

FEDERAL TRANSFER COMPLETE.

Walter lunged toward the laptop.

“What have you done?”

Graham stepped back.

“The files were uploaded before I arrived.”

Walter looked toward Caleb.

Caleb slowly removed his earpiece.

“I’m sorry, Mr. Vance.”

Walter stared.

“Caleb?”

The security chief placed his gun on the table.

“I’ve been cooperating with federal investigators for nine days.”

Brent raised his pistol.

A shot rang out.

Caleb fell.

Natalie screamed.

Graham rushed forward.

But the armed man upstairs grabbed Natalie and dragged her backward.

Brent aimed at Graham.

“Nobody moves!”

Then the mansion’s security alarms began sounding.

Outside, blue lights flashed across the windows.

Police vehicles surrounded the property.

Walter backed toward the fireplace.

Elaine closed her eyes.

Adrian rushed toward the staircase.

And Brent did something nobody expected.

He pointed his gun at Elaine.

“Tell them,” he shouted.

Elaine stared at him.

“Brent, don’t.”

“Tell them who planned the whole thing!”

Walter turned toward his wife.

“What is he talking about?”

Brent’s voice cracked.

“Tell them who ordered Natalie’s disappearance!”

Elaine’s face changed.

For the first time in forty years, the Vance family matriarch looked afraid.

Then Natalie called from upstairs.

“Graham!”

He looked up.

She was standing beside the railing.

And in her hand was a small black device.

A transmitter.

She pressed the button.

Every television in the mansion switched on.

A recorded voice filled the house.

Elaine Vance’s voice.

“Once Natalie is gone, Graham will come back to us. He always does.”

Walter stared at his wife.

Elaine whispered, “Turn it off.”

But the recording continued.

“And if the child becomes a problem, make sure Adrian never finds out she exists.”

Adrian stepped backward.

Graham looked at his mother.

The woman who had kissed Natalie at the anniversary dinner.

The woman who had pretended to be horrified by her bruised face.

The woman who had helped arrange the attack.

Elaine’s lips trembled.

“You don’t understand.”

Graham’s answer was quiet.

“Then explain it to the police.”

A crash came from upstairs.

The lights went out.

Natalie screamed.

And one final gunshot echoed through the mansion.
