The daughter of Republican Minnesota gubernatorial candidate Jeff Johnson was fatally stabbed during what authorities described as a failed murder-suicide over the weekend, prompting Johnson to abruptly suspend his 2026 campaign.

Hallie Marie Tobler, 22, was found dead inside her locked apartment in St. Cloud on Saturday evening, suffering from multiple stab wounds, according to the St. Cloud Police Department. Officers responded to the residence following reports of a medical emergency.

Her husband, 23-year-old Dylan Michael Tobler, was also discovered inside the apartment with critical stab injuries that investigators believe were self-inflicted. Police said he survived and is now in stable condition.

Authorities confirmed that Dylan Tobler has been taken into custody and is expected to face homicide charges related to Hallie’s death once he is released from the hospital.

Following the tragedy, Johnson β€” a former St. Cloud city councilman who launched his campaign for the Republican nomination for Minnesota governor in March 2025 β€” announced that he has suspended his run. The Minnesota Republican Party confirmed the decision in a statement released Monday, citing the devastating loss of his daughter.

β€œThere are no words to fully convey the depth of our sorrow for Jeff and his family,” the statement read. β€œThe loss of a child is beyond comprehension, and our thoughts and prayers are with them as they navigate this unimaginable grief.”

β€œOut of respect for his family and the magnitude of this tragedy, Jeff has chosen to suspend his campaign for Governor of Minnesota. We ask Minnesotans to keep the Johnson family in their thoughts during this incredibly painful time.”

Johnson’s campaign had focused heavily on issues such as crime, immigration, and fraud in Minnesota, a state that has recently seen heightened tensions surrounding federal immigration enforcement and public protests.
