Nicole Kidman ‘Fought Hard for Custody’ During Divorce from Keith Urban

Nicole Kidman is reportedly said to have fought fiercely for custody of her two daughters during her divorce from singer Keith Urban late last year.
According to Daily Mail, before reaching a final agreement, Kidman and Urban were deeply divided over custody arrangements. “The most contentious issue between them was custody,” a source revealed on January 8. “Initially, Keith wanted equal shared custody.”
The insider added that the negotiations were an extremely stressful period for the Oscar-winning actress. “After nearly 20 years of marriage, Nicole knows very well how stubborn Keith can be. She felt anxious and worried, believing he would refuse to back down.”

The source continued that Kidman spent a great deal of time persuading Urban, who ultimately agreed to her proposed terms. “Their two daughters are both teenagers and need their mother more than their father at this stage. Keith understood that he would have little advantage if the case went to court and eventually stepped aside. Only then was the divorce finalized.”
Another source claimed Kidman was determined to secure primary custody because she had not had that experience in her first divorce from actor Tom Cruise. In 2001, Kidman and Cruise agreed to joint custody of their two adopted children, Isabella (now 33) and Connor (30). However, both children later chose to live primarily with their father and were raised within the Church of Scientology, the religion Cruise practices. This reportedly affected Kidman’s relationship with them following the divorce.

Beyond emotional factors, work schedules were also considered during negotiations. Urban frequently tours, making his schedule less flexible than Kidman’s. By contrast, the actress remains at home when not filming, and her children can accompany her to movie sets—an environment viewed as more stable than the backstage setting of concerts.
Under the final agreement, Kidman will care for their daughters for 306 days each year. Urban will spend 59 days with them, mainly on alternating weekends from Saturday morning to Sunday afternoon.
Both parties reportedly declined child support and spousal support payments. Kidman currently lives with her daughters at the family home in Nashville, while Urban is said to have moved out in the summer of 2025.

According to New Idea, the 58-year-old singer has struggled to adjust to the family changes, especially as his daughters spent Thanksgiving, Christmas, Faith’s birthday, and the New Year holidays with their mother. Missing his younger daughter’s birthday is said to have left Urban heartbroken and feeling isolated.
Kidman filed for divorce from Urban in September 2025 after 19 years of marriage, citing “irreconcilable differences.” Previously, Page Six reported that the actress did not want the split and had tried to save the marriage.
Kidman and Urban married in 2006 in Australia and were long regarded as one of the most stable and loving celebrity couples in international entertainment, frequently appearing together at public events and openly supporting each other’s careers for nearly two decades.
