Maddox Drops Brad Pitt’s Surname

Maddox Jolie, 25, the adopted son of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, has stopped using his father’s surname and now goes by his mother’s last name only in his latest professional work.

According to People on February 26, Maddox worked as an assistant director on Couture, Angelina Jolie’s newest film. In the end credits, his name appears as “Maddox Jolie,” drawing attention for the absence of “Pitt.” The film premiered in France on February 18, and the outlet confirmed that he has officially dropped his father’s surname in public credits.

Previously, Couture was screened at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2025, where press materials already listed him as Maddox Jolie. This marked the first time he publicly changed how his name appeared in a film project with his mother. In 2024, he was still credited as Maddox Jolie-Pitt while working on Maria, another project directed by Angelina Jolie.

International media have contacted representatives for Jolie but have not yet received a response.

Maddox’s full name is Maddox Chivan Jolie-Pitt. Born in 2001 in Cambodia, he was adopted by Angelina Jolie at seven months old, shortly after she completed filming Lara Croft: Tomb Raider in the country. At the time, Jolie was married to Billy Bob Thornton and chose to become a single mother. When she began dating Brad Pitt in 2005, Pitt later adopted Maddox as well.

Maddox enrolled at Underwood International College, part of Yonsei University, in August 2019, majoring in biochemistry, though he is believed to spend most of his time pursuing a career in filmmaking. He has worked on several of his mother’s projects, including By the Sea (2015) and Without Blood (2024), and served as an executive producer on First They Killed My Father (2017), a film based on Cambodian genocide survivor Loung Ung’s memoir.

Maddox is the fourth of the six children of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie to publicly drop Pitt’s surname since the couple’s split in 2016. Following the divorce, the children have lived with their mother. In November 2023, Zahara introduced herself as Zahara Marley Jolie at an event at Spellman College. In May 2024, Vivienne was credited as Vivienne Jolie while working on the stage musical The Outsiders with her mother. Two months later, Shiloh legally changed her name from Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt to Shiloh Jolie after turning 18.

So far, Shiloh is the only child known to have completed the legal name-change process. The status of the other siblings remains unclear. According to People, the decision reportedly affected Brad Pitt deeply. A source said he was aware of Shiloh dropping his surname and that it was painful for him, as he loves and misses his children.

Pax Thiên, the couple’s adopted son from Vietnam, and Knox, the youngest child and Vivienne’s twin, have not changed their surnames. However, Pax has been reported to have a strained relationship with Brad Pitt, while Knox has remained publicly silent about the family’s post-divorce tensions.
