This is America’s 2,000-lb GBU-31 JDAMs

The GBU-31 JDAM is one of the most widely used precision-guided munitions in the U.S. arsenal. Rather than being a completely new bomb, it’s a guidance kit that transforms traditional “dumb” bombs into highly accurate, all-weather weapons.

What It Is
JDAM stands for Joint Direct Attack Munition. The GBU-31 variant is based on a 2,000-pound-class bomb body (typically the Mk 84), fitted with:

A GPS/INS guidance system
Tail fins for stability and control
A guidance kit mounted to the rear
How It Works
Once released from an aircraft, the bomb:

Uses GPS coordinates to guide itself to the target
Adjusts its flight path mid-air using control fins
Strikes with high precision—even through clouds, smoke, or darkness
This makes it extremely reliable compared to older unguided bombs.

Key Capabilities
High accuracy (often within a few meters)
All-weather operation
Fire-and-forget (no need for continuous guidance after release)
Compatible with aircraft like the F-15E Strike Eagle, F-16 Fighting Falcon, and B-52 Stratofortress
Why It Matters
The GBU-31 JDAM allows aircraft to strike targets from safer distances with a much higher probability of success. It reduces the need for multiple attack runs and minimizes exposure to enemy defenses.
