FRENCH SHIP CROSSES THE STRAIT OF HORMUZ AMID IRAN’S BLOCKADE: FIRST WESTERN EUROPEAN VESSEL SINCE THE WAR BEGAN nt

The container ship CMA CGM Kribi, Malta-flagged and owned by French shipping giant CMA CGM (the world’s third-largest container line), crossed the Strait of Hormuz on April 2. It’s the first Western European-owned vessel to do so since the war started on February 28.

The ship used a striking tactic: before entering Iranian territorial waters, it changed its AIS destination to “Owner France,” signaling its nationality to Iranian authorities. Chinese vessels have used a similar approach, broadcasting “Chinese owner and crew.” The Kribi sailed through Iran’s approved route between Qeshm and Larak islands, dubbed the “Tehran Toll Booth” by Lloyd’s List.

The crossing coincided with Macron’s statements that same day: “This Strait must be reopened because it is strategic for energy flows, fertilizers and international trade, but it can only be done in consultation with Iran.” France also blocked a UN resolution that would have authorized force in the Strait.
