In March of 1942, a black American soldier walked into a small Australian cafe in Queensland, sat down, and waited because every single day of his life, in every restaurant, in every town he’d ever lived in, he had been told to leave before he was ever served.

But this time, the woman behind the counter did something that no white person in America had ever done for him.

He stood there for a moment in the thick Queensland heat, sweat already running down his neck, and looked around at a world that felt nothing like home.
The air smelled like eucalyptus and red dust and something sweet he could not name.

He was a private in the 96th Engineer Battalion, and he had traveled more than 9,000 m from Mississippi to get here.

Back home, he knew exactly which doors he could walk through and which ones would get him killed.
