“FROM A COUGH TO HEART FAILURE: BABY CAMILA’S FIGHT FOR HER LIFE AFTER RARE HEART DIAGNOSIS”
What began as something that looked like a common childhood illness quickly turned into every parent’s worst nightmare for baby Camila.
One day, she was coughing and wheezing—symptoms that often don’t raise immediate alarm in infants. But soon after, her parents were hit with devastating news: their 5-month-old daughter was in heart failure.
Camila’s condition was later diagnosed as ALCAPA, a rare and life-threatening congenital heart defect. In this condition, the left coronary artery is incorrectly connected to the pulmonary artery instead of the aorta, meaning the heart muscle does not receive enough oxygen-rich blood to function properly.
Her parents had no warning. Like many babies with this defect, Camila showed no obvious signs at birth. Doctors explained that ALCAPA can remain hidden until a baby’s body is pushed into stress—often triggered by illness or infection. In Camila’s case, it was a respiratory infection that revealed the crisis unfolding inside her tiny chest.
By the time she was diagnosed, her heart was already severely strained, working far beyond its limits just to keep her alive.
On February 28, Camila was urgently airlifted alone to Texas Children’s Hospital, where specialists prepared for an immediate fight for her life. Just two days later, on March 2, surgeons performed a complex operation to repair her heart. Her family held onto hope that this would be the moment everything turned around.

Instead of improving, Camila continued to struggle. Her condition worsened again, leaving doctors with another difficult decision. On May 5th, she was placed on a Berlin Heart device—a mechanical pump designed to take over the work of her failing heart while she heals, or while she waits for a possible transplant.
It is a fragile and uncertain path forward. The machine now helps circulate blood through her tiny body, giving her heart the support it desperately needs.
Through it all, her parents say their faith has carried them. They describe Camila as a fighter—small but incredibly strong, continuing to push forward even when the odds feel overwhelming.
Her journey is far from over, and every day remains a critical battle between hope and uncertainty.
For now, her family is asking for prayers—for strength, for healing, and for a miracle for baby Camila. ❤️
