STRONG LIKE KAITLYN: A COMMUNITY’S LOVE, A FAMILY’S GRIEF, AND A LIFE THAT INSPIRED BEYOND MEASURE”

Update: I’m so sorry to report that Kaitlyn passed away Thursday morning at 1:34.

Her mother, Kimberly, shared the heartbreaking news. After a long and painful journey with osteosarcoma, 17-year-old Kaitlyn Hutchins has been laid to rest, surrounded in spirit by the love of her family and the community that never stopped standing beside her.

For Jerry and Kimberly Hutchins, this is the unimaginable reality of losing their daughter—a young girl whose presence filled every room she entered with warmth, humor, and light.

Kaitlyn was from Fairdale, Kentucky, just outside Louisville. To those who knew her, she was funny, sharp-witted, and deeply grounded. She carried a quiet strength that showed not only in her personality, but in the way she faced everything life placed in front of her.

Her journey with cancer began on March 21st, 2024, when she was diagnosed with osteosarcoma. What followed was an intense and exhausting fight: months of chemotherapy, a major surgery in which her femur was removed and replaced with a titanium rod and artificial knee, and a recovery that saw her walking again just 12 hours after surgery—a moment that reflected her determination to keep moving forward no matter what.

But the battle did not end there.

When doctors later discovered nodules in her lungs, Kaitlyn underwent further treatment, including care at MD Anderson in Houston. Eventually, when more nodules were found and options became limited, her family was given the devastating reality that there was nothing more medicine could offer.

She was transitioned to home hospice care.

Even in those final weeks, Kaitlyn’s story did not become one of silence or isolation. It became one of community. Teachers, classmates, and neighbors in Fairdale came together to make sure she did not miss out on life’s milestones. When she could not attend graduation or prom, they brought those moments to her. They celebrated her in her home, surrounding her with love, laughter, and dignity.

Her mother shared that their hospice nurse was scheduled to visit five days a week—but often came every day. It became part of the quiet rhythm of care that carried the family through an impossible time.

Through it all, Kimberly says Kaitlyn’s life continued to impact others in ways they never expected.

“Through her journey, Kaitlyn has turned many people to Christ,” she shared. She also spoke softly about how some of Kaitlyn’s friends have returned to church, something she holds onto as a source of comfort in the midst of grief.

“That’s a good thing,” she said quietly.

Kaitlyn’s story is one of courage that did not fade, even as her body grew weaker. A life that continued to matter deeply, not only in its brightest moments, but also in its hardest ones.

Her legacy now lives in the people she inspired, the love she gave, and the strength she carried until the very end.

Strong like Kaitlyn. 💛
