15-Year-Old Pakistani Hero Aitzaz Hasan Sacrifices Life to Stop Suicide Bomber, Saving 2,000 Students

Teen’s split-second bravery prevents massacre at school in Hangu, Pakistan
HANGU, Pakistan — On a January morning in 2014, 15-year-old Aitzaz Hasan made the ultimate sacrifice when he confronted a suicide bomber attempting to enter his school, where nearly 2,000 students were gathered for morning assembly.
As the attacker approached Government High School in Ibrahimzai, Aitzaz, who was late for class, immediately sprang into action. While other students ran inside to raise the alarm, the brave teenager grappled with the bomber, preventing him from entering the school building. The suicide bomber then detonated his explosives, killing both himself and Aitzaz instantly.
Thanks to Aitzaz’s extraordinary courage, not a single student inside the school was harmed.
His father later delivered a powerful tribute: “My son made his mother cry, but he saved hundreds of mothers from crying for their children.”
Aitzaz Hasan was posthumously awarded Pakistan’s Sitara-e-Shujaat, one of the country’s highest civilian honors for bravery. His school was renamed Aitzaz Hasan Shaheed High School in his memory. His story was later portrayed in the biographical film Salute, and he was named Herald Pakistan’s Person of the Year in 2014.
Aitzaz remains a national hero in Pakistan, symbolizing courage, selflessness, and the profound impact one young person can have in the face of terror.
