Malé, Maldives — Five Italian divers who went missing during an expedition in the Maldives are believed to have taken the wrong tunnel inside a cave system and perished in a dead-end corridor, according to the head of the recovery operation.

The victims have been identified as:

• Giorgia Sommacal, Montefalcone’s daughter
• Federico Gualtieri, a marine biologist
• Muriel Oddenino, a researcher
• Gianluca Benedetti, a diving instructor

In addition to the five Italians, a Maldivian military diver tragically lost his life while participating in the search efforts for the missing group.
