Italian Divers Likely Died After Taking Wrong Tunnel in Maldives Cave, Recovery Leader Says

Malé, Maldives — Five Italian divers who went missing during an expedition in the Maldives are believed to have taken the wrong tunnel inside a cave system and perished in a dead-end corridor, according to the head of the recovery operation.
Laura Marroni, who led the company tasked with recovering the bodies, provided the update on the tragic incident that claimed the lives of an entire group of experienced divers.
The victims have been identified as:
- Monica Montefalcone, an associate ecology professor at the University of Genoa
- Giorgia Sommacal, Montefalcone’s daughter
- Federico Gualtieri, a marine biologist
- Muriel Oddenino, a researcher
- Gianluca Benedetti, a diving instructor
In addition to the five Italians, a Maldivian military diver tragically lost his life while participating in the search efforts for the missing group.
The incident has shocked the international diving community, as the group consisted of highly qualified professionals with extensive experience in marine research and underwater exploration. The exact circumstances leading to their fatal navigation error are still under investigation, but officials believe disorientation within the complex cave system played a central role.
The Maldives, renowned for its world-class diving sites and intricate underwater cave networks, attracts thousands of divers each year. However, cave diving carries significant risks, particularly in areas with strong currents, limited visibility, and complex passages.
Local authorities and international teams worked together in the challenging recovery operation. Marroni and her team faced difficult conditions while retrieving the bodies from the underwater cave.
This heartbreaking event has prompted renewed calls for stricter safety protocols and better mapping of underwater cave systems in popular diving destinations. The Italian government and the University of Genoa have expressed condolences to the families of the victims.
The story continues to develop as investigators work to determine the full sequence of events that led to this multi-fatality diving accident.
