After a Gang Abducted Her Husband in Mexico, a Brave Woman Captured the Cartel Leader’s Mother and Demanded a Swap

In one of the most audacious revenge stories to come out of Mexico, a determined wife took justice into her own hands — and won.

The Kidnapping in Guerrero

In December 2016, in the violence-plagued state of Guerrero, Mexico, a local engineer named Isauro de Paz Duque was abducted by members of a criminal gang led by a man known as “El Tequilero.”

Instead of waiting helplessly for authorities, his wife, Yadira, sprang into action.

A Mother-for-Husband Swap

Yadira rallied villagers from San Miguel Totolapan and together they tracked down and captured El Tequilero’s own mother. They then recorded a powerful video message that was broadcast on local television.

In the video, Yadira delivered a direct ultimatum:

“In return for my husband’s life, I will deliver your mother.”

When there was no immediate response, a second video was released — this time showing El Tequilero’s mother pleading with her son to release the engineer.

The bold strategy worked.

Safe Release

After negotiations, both hostages were released safely. Isauro was returned to his family, and El Tequilero’s mother was handed over to the police.

The governor of Guerrero eventually deployed over 200 security personnel to the village, but by that point, Yadira and the villagers had already resolved the situation themselves.

This extraordinary case of civilian courage quickly became legendary in Mexico, highlighting the desperation many families feel when loved ones are taken by powerful criminal groups — and what can happen when ordinary people decide to fight back.
