At least 150 people displaced by massive apartment complex fire near UC Riverside

An apartment complex near UC Riverside was destroyed after a massive fire broke out Friday morning, displacing at least 150 residents, according to firefighters.

Sky5’s Rich Prickett was over the three-alarm fire at the University Riverside Garden Apartments on Iowa Avenue near University Avenue.

The fire began at approximately 11:13 a.m. and quickly grew to three alarms. A large portion of the complex was engulfed.

No injuries have been reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Riverside Fire and Arson Unit.

At least 50 of the units were destroyed in the blaze, but firefighters say they were able to save 62 units.

Due to the extensive fire and water damage, portions of the building’s interior are beginning to collapse, according to Riverside PD.

Crews will continue working through the night and into Saturday to extinguish any remaining hot spots.

People are asked to avoid the area as crews remain on the scene.

UC Riverside said it is working to determine how many of its students live at the complex.
