Drunk Driver Crashes Into Toll Booth, Kills Grandmother Before Driving Into Ocean

DAYTONA BEACH SHORES, Fla. — A tragic incident occurred on Monday when 35-year-old Deanna Harrell allegedly drove her black pickup truck into a beach toll booth at about 40 mph, killing 62-year-old toll attendant Tammie Jo Baker.

According to Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood, Harrell, who reeked of alcohol, slammed into the Dunlawton Avenue toll booth around 12:40 p.m. The impact instantly killed Baker, a longtime local grandmother who was just weeks from turning 63.

The truck continued through the wreckage, drove onto the beach, and plunged into the ocean. Harrell was pulled from the vehicle and taken into custody. She is currently undergoing mental health evaluation under the Baker Act.

Witnesses and prior 911 calls reported her reckless driving earlier that day. Harrell had reportedly been drinking at a lounge after leaving work.

Baker was remembered by family as the “glue of the family” who loved the beach and hosting gatherings. The community is mourning her loss as the investigation continues
