Tragic Home Invasion: Elderly Mississippi Couple Allegedly Slain by 17-Year-Old Burglar

MENDENHALL, Mississippi — A beloved elderly couple described by their community as “the sweetest” people were allegedly murdered in their own home by a 17-year-old burglar, who then engaged law enforcement in a dramatic six-hour standoff, authorities said.

Billy Blair, 74, and his wife Virginia Carol Blair, 71, were killed during a home invasion last Wednesday. The suspect, Cordarius Hobbs, has been charged with capital murder in connection with their deaths.

Deputies responded to the couple’s residence for a welfare check after concerned family members were unable to reach them. Upon arrival, officers encountered gunfire. The front door was already open, indicating the burglary was in progress.

According to authorities, Hobbs initially told police he would surrender at the front door but instead fled through the back of the home. After officers deployed tear gas, he allegedly opened fire on multiple law enforcement personnel and even an infant, pinning some officers down with gunfire.

Hobbs was eventually shot by a state trooper and sustained non-life-threatening injuries. He was apprehended following a chase and taken into custody.

The Blairs, who operated a tire business in the area, were remembered fondly by their pastor, Andy Fullington. “They were the sweetest couple… they had such a beautiful spirit about them,” he said. “They walked with the Lord. They have left behind a beautiful example, a shining light.”

Virginia Blair served as a church pianist for 30 years and was known for her encouraging words, even after imperfect sermons. Family friend Buddy Keyes echoed the sentiment, calling the couple “wonderful people” who were deeply devoted to their faith, marriage, church, and community.

Hobbs appeared in court last Friday and faces a total of 13 charges, including burglary and capital murder, along with multiple assault-related offenses. He pleaded not guilty and was denied bond. He is scheduled to appear in court again next month.

In Mississippi, capital murder can carry the death penalty for adults, while juveniles face a maximum of 50 years in prison.

This heartbreaking incident has left the tight-knit Simpson County community in mourning for a couple remembered for their kindness and strong Christian faith.
