Shipping Heiress Caroline von Rantzau Shot Dead on Family’s Luxury South African Wildlife Estate — One Day After Close Associate Found Killed

Limpopo Province, South Africa — In a shocking double tragedy, 26-year-old German shipping heiress Caroline von Rantzau was found dead from a gunshot wound inside her room at her family’s exclusive wildlife estate, just one day after the property’s financial manager was also killed on the same grounds.

According to reports, Caroline von Rantzau, heir to the prominent German shipping company Deutsche Afrika-Linien (DAL), was discovered on June 1, 2026, at the Leeuwfontein Estate in South Africa’s Limpopo province. Gunshots were reportedly heard on the property, which is known for luxury safaris and trophy hunting in the region.

Police believe she was shot with a .357 caliber hunting rifle believed to have come from her father’s gun cabinet. Her father, Dr. Eberhart von Rantzau, serves as managing director of DAL, a leading chemical tanker company based in Hamburg that traces its roots back to 1924.

Just hours earlier, on May 31, the estate’s 44-year-old financial manager, Arno Koën — described as a close confidant, mentor, and “foster father” figure to the young heiress — was found dead from a 9mm gunshot wound. Koën had been responsible for bookings and finances at the property.

South African authorities are awaiting autopsy results to determine the exact causes of death and whether further investigations against other individuals will be pursued. No arrests have been made in connection with either shooting, and police have released limited details about the circumstances.

Initial rumors circulating within the company suggested von Rantzau had died in a car accident, but those reports were quickly debunked.

The Leeuwfontein Estate is a sprawling wildlife conservation property home to various animals, including antelope, horses, wildebeest, impalas, and more. Caroline von Rantzau had recently been building her own real estate portfolio in the area, purchasing two properties near the Mozambique border, and was actively involved in caring for the animals on the family estate.

This double tragedy has sent shockwaves through the family’s business and social circles. DAL, which sold its container liner business to Hapag-Lloyd in 2022, remains a significant player in European chemical shipping under the von Rantzau family’s third-generation leadership.

Investigations are ongoing as authorities work to uncover the truth behind the mysterious deaths on the luxury estate.
