21-Year-Old Brazilian Woman Was Still Alive and Responsive After 130-Foot Fall, Rescuer Says

São Paulo, Brazil – Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, the 21-year-old woman who fell 130 feet from an abandoned bridge during a rope jumping activity, was still alive and responsive when rescuers reached her, according to an off-duty nurse who was among the first on the scene.
Maria was reportedly pushed from the bridge near São Paulo on Saturday without any safety rope attached, in what authorities describe as a catastrophic failure by organizers. The horrifying moment was captured on video, showing her arms outstretched as she plummeted to the ground below.
Despite the devastating impact, Maria had a weak pulse and was conscious when help arrived. The off-duty nurse who rushed to assist revealed she was even able to speak with the young woman.
“I even talked to her,” the nurse said.

Tragically, Maria later succumbed to her severe injuries.
Police have detained six people in connection with the incident. Three organizers have been charged after investigators determined Maria was sent off the bridge without any safety equipment. Authorities say those responsible have been unable to explain who failed to attach the critical safety line.
The case has sparked outrage across Brazil over reckless safety practices in adventure activities. Maria’s family was previously forced to delete her social media accounts after they were flooded with sickening perverted and necrophilia-related comments following news of her death.
This tragedy occurred just one day before another fatal fall in the country, when 59-year-old hiker Rosemary Suzart Garcia plunged 100 feet while applying bug spray on a trail in Maricá.
Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas was remembered as a vibrant young woman. The ongoing investigation continues to examine the full circumstances surrounding the fatal jump, with authorities focusing on negligence and possible criminal responsibility by the event organizers.
