Lt. Col. Miles Middleton, Decorated Test Pilot, Identified as First Victim of Deadly B-52 Stratofortress Crash at Edwards Air Force Base

Edwards Air Force Base, California – The first victim of the catastrophic B-52 Stratofortress crash at Edwards Air Force Base has been identified as Lt. Col. Miles Middleton, a highly decorated Air Force test pilot and former squadron commander whose family is now facing an “unimaginable loss.”

Middleton was among the eight people killed when the B-52 went down shortly after takeoff during what officials described as a routine test mission. The massive plume of black smoke from the crash site was visible for miles across the Mojave Desert.

A family friend shared the devastating news, stating: “Pam Middleton and her two children are facing an unimaginable loss after Pam’s husband, Miles, was tragically killed in the crash of the B-52 at Edwards Air Force Base.”

Middleton had previously commanded the 419th Flight Test Squadron, overseeing developmental testing of bomber aircraft including the B-52. Colleagues remembered him as an exceptional pilot and dedicated family man deeply involved in his community.

The crash, which occurred around 11:20 a.m. on June 15, has been called “unsurvivable.” All eight crew members and personnel aboard perished. Boeing confirmed that two of its employees were among the dead. An investigation is underway and could take up to six months.

Friends and fellow service members have expressed profound grief, with many highlighting Middleton’s skill, leadership, and commitment to his family and country. A GoFundMe has been established to support Pam Middleton and their two children in the wake of the tragedy.

This incident marks the first fatal B-52 loss in over a decade, casting a spotlight on the risks associated with operating the aging but vital strategic bomber fleet.

The U.S. Air Force and base officials continue to offer support to the families of all those lost while the full circumstances of the crash are examined. Our thoughts remain with the Middleton family and all those affected by this heartbreaking event.
