Terminal Cancer Patient’s Purse Stolen During Surgery at UC San Diego Health Hospital

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — A 17-year-old San Diego girl battling terminal Stage 4 pancreatic cancer had her purse stolen while she was undergoing surgery at UC San Diego Health in Hillcrest, her family says. The bag contained cash, jewelry, identification, and irreplaceable sentimental photos of her late father.
Sahara Morquecho was in the operating room when the theft allegedly occurred, according to her sister, Kaleena Morquecho, who spoke with FOX 5 San Diego. Sahara was diagnosed with the aggressive cancer just weeks ago.
The missing purse held critical items including Sahara’s wallet, ID, cash, jewelry, and treasured photographs of her deceased father — items that hold immense emotional value for the family during this difficult time.
Kaleena Morquecho told reporters that hospital staff initially suggested the purse might have been lost in the linens and would turn up. However, after repeated inquiries over several days, no progress was made, and no incident report was filed initially. The family believes the suspect may be someone who works at or has access to the hospital.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage online, with many expressing disbelief that someone would steal from a teenage cancer patient during such a vulnerable moment.
UC San Diego Health has not yet issued a detailed public statement on the investigation, but the case highlights concerns about security and trust in healthcare facilities, especially for patients facing life-threatening illnesses.
Sahara’s family is now focused on supporting her recovery and hopes the stolen items — particularly the sentimental photos — can somehow be recovered. Authorities are investigating the theft.
