Single Dad Luca Trapanese Adopts Baby Girl with Down Syndrome After She Was Rejected by 20 Families

NAPLES, Italy — In a story that has touched millions around the world, Italian single father Luca Trapanese adopted a newborn baby girl with Down syndrome in 2017 after she was passed over by approximately 20 prospective adoptive families.

The baby, named Alba, was just days old when her biological mother placed her for adoption. Due to her diagnosis of Down syndrome, many families declined to adopt her, citing concerns about potential medical needs and long-term caregiving responsibilities. Alba faced the possibility of growing up in an institution if no family stepped forward.

Trapanese, who had long dreamed of becoming a father and had extensive experience working with people with disabilities, saw Alba not as a challenge but as a child in need of love. Despite Italy’s strict adoption laws — which rarely allow single men, particularly gay men, to adopt newborns — he was approved and welcomed Alba into his home when she was about 13 to 30 days old.

“I didn’t see limitations or an uncertain future — I saw a child who deserved to be loved,” Trapanese has shared in interviews. He emphasized that Alba is “perfect” and has brought immense joy to his life.

Over the years, father and daughter have shared countless happy moments, milestones, and everyday adventures. Trapanese frequently posts about their bond, highlighting Alba’s infectious personality, warmth, and the many ways she defies low expectations. The fears some had about raising a child with Down syndrome, he says, quickly faded as they experienced her vibrant spirit.

Their heartwarming story has gone viral multiple times, inspiring conversations about adoption, disability rights, and the importance of looking beyond diagnoses to see the potential in every child. It serves as a powerful reminder that many children with special needs are still waiting for loving families willing to embrace them fully.
