Florida Firefighter and Wife Adopt Newborn Found in Station’s Safe Haven Baby Box

OCALA, Fla. — A Florida firefighter’s overnight shift took a life-changing turn in January 2023 when an alarm sounded at 2 a.m., alerting him to activity at the station’s Safe Haven Baby Box. Inside, he discovered a newborn baby girl wrapped in a pink blanket.

The firefighter, identified as Vincent (Vince), and his wife Katy had been struggling with infertility for nearly a decade as they tried to start a family. The moment he opened the box and saw the tiny infant — later named Zoey — he knew their lives would never be the same.

“I got out of bed, walked over… and when the lights came on and I opened up the back door to the box, Zoey was laying in there,” Vincent recalled. She was calm, with a bottle beside her.

After rushing the baby to the hospital for checks, the couple quickly expressed their desire to adopt her. Just days later, on January 4, 2023, little Zoey went home with them. The adoption was officially finalized in April 2023.

The family has shared their story publicly to thank Zoey’s biological mother for making the brave and loving choice to use the Safe Haven Baby Box, ensuring the infant’s safety. They describe Zoey as thriving, playful, observant, and full of joy in their loving home.

Safe Haven Baby Boxes provide a safe, anonymous way for parents in crisis to surrender newborns. This was the first such surrender at the Ocala station’s box, which was Florida’s only one at the time. The couple’s story has inspired many, highlighting how compassion and timing can create beautiful families.
