Terrifying Moment: Huge Sea Lions Chase Tourists Off Popular California Beach

Beachgoers at a popular Southern California spot were forced to flee in panic after two massive sea lions charged onto the shore and chased visitors across the sand. The dramatic encounter occurred at La Jolla Cove in San Diego and was captured on video.

In footage posted to Instagram on July 7, 2026, by Dion Ruzicka, one large sea lion emerged from the water and barreled across the beach, sending terrified tourists screaming and running for safety. Moments later, a second sea lion joined in, prompting even more chaos as people scrambled toward higher ground or back into the surf.

The hefty marine mammals waddled aggressively after the fleeing crowds, appearing undeterred by the number of people. Shouts of “Oh my God” can be heard amid the commotion. The animals eventually returned to the ocean and swam away.

This is not the first such incident at La Jolla Cove. Similar videos from previous years have shown sea lions chasing beachgoers in the area. San Diego officials have repeatedly warned the public about the risks of approaching wildlife, especially during pupping season when sea lions become more protective and aggressive.

The city’s website notes that increased interactions between humans and sea lions—often involving attempts to touch the animals or take selfies—can be dangerous for both people and the marine mammals. Such behavior may also violate the federal Marine Mammal Protection Act. Officials recommend observing the animals from a safe distance, such as from the boardwalk.

No injuries were reported in the latest incident, but authorities continue to stress the importance of respecting wildlife boundaries.
