Remains of 4-Year-Old Javeayah Harris Recovered from South Carolina Reservoir After Alleged Chemical Dissolution by Parents

Aiken County, SC – Aiken County Sheriff Marty Sawyer announced Thursday that human remains recovered from Cedar Creek Reservoir in Fairfield County have been identified through DNA testing as those of 4-year-old Javeayah Harris. Authorities believe the child’s parents used corrosive chemicals and tools in an attempt to destroy her body before disposing of the remains in the water.

During an emotional press conference, Sheriff Sawyer revealed that only partial remains were found and that investigators do not expect to recover additional material. “These subjects went to great lengths to cover their revolting and repulsive actions,” he stated, describing the case as one of the most horrific he has encountered in 37 years of law enforcement. He added that he was “truly sickened” by the details uncovered during the investigation and refused to refer to the suspects as “mom and dad,” saying they do not deserve the title.

Javeayah Harris was reported missing in late June 2026. Her parents, 22-year-old Michilae Herring and 23-year-old Johmarea Harris, were arrested and charged with homicide by child abuse. Both were denied bond on those initial charges. Following the recovery of the remains, additional charges of destruction and desecration of human remains have been filed against both individuals.

According to the sheriff, evidence indicates that after Javeayah’s death — believed to have occurred approximately one month before she was reported missing — her parents allegedly used chemicals and tools to accelerate decomposition. The remaining material was then poured into Cedar Creek Reservoir (also known locally as Dumpy Pond or Stumpy Pond).

The investigation involved multiple law enforcement agencies and drew significant community attention. Sheriff Sawyer thanked the joint efforts of local, state, and federal partners in pursuing justice for Javeayah.

This case remains active as prosecutors continue to build their case. The suspects are currently in custody.
