Kelsey Elem, a 25-year-old Black transgender woman known for her vibrant personality, advocacy for the transgender community, and kindness toward others, was fatally shot on April 24, 2025, during a domestic dispute at her home in the 5800 block of Grace Avenue in Affton, a St. Louis County suburb.

What Happened: According to St. Louis County police and charging documents, Elem and her 21-year-old boyfriend, Martino Lewis, were in a romantic relationship. An eyewitness overheard them arguing and saw Lewis punch Elem. Fearing for her safety, Elem told the witness she was going to get her gun and asked them to call 911. While the witness was on the phone with dispatchers, a gunshot was heard. Lewis then fled the scene in Elem’s vehicle.

Elem was transported to a hospital but succumbed to her gunshot wound. Lewis was later apprehended in St. Louis City while still in possession of her vehicle. He faces charges of second-degree murder, armed criminal action, and third-degree domestic assault. Bond was set at $400,000 cash only.

Elem’s family was devastated, with her mother, Calvenita Brock, forced to clean up the horrific scene. Family members described Kelsey as selfless, always willing to help others, and a proud advocate who embraced her identity. The day before her death, she had posted positively about her transition journey.

This case highlights the dangers of domestic violence, which disproportionately affects transgender individuals, particularly Black trans women. Community members and advocates continue to mourn Elem and call for justice and greater awareness.
