A 17-year-old Mississippi teenager charged with the double murder of an elderly couple who had hired him as a handyman was already well-known to local law enforcement as a “troubled juvenile” suspected in multiple burglaries and vehicle thefts, according to authorities.

Cordarius Laray Hobbs, of Mendenhall, is accused of fatally shooting Billy Blair, 74, and his wife, Virginia Carol Blair (also referred to as Virginia Carol Barnett-Blair), 71, inside their home on W.L. Blair Road in Simpson County on June 3, 2026. The couple, who owned a local tire business and were deeply involved in their church—Carol as a longtime pianist and Billy on the security team—were widely remembered by neighbors and their pastor as the “sweetest” couple in the community.

According to investigators, Hobbs had previously done cleaning and maintenance work around the Blairs’ property. Family members of the teen confirmed during a preliminary hearing that he knew the victims through that employment.

The killings were discovered when three contractors arrived around mid-morning to install a generator and noticed the couple’s vehicle door open with several guns visible on the seats. A welfare check was requested. When Simpson County deputies arrived, they were met with gunfire from inside the residence, sparking a nearly two-hour standoff. One deputy was shot and suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Hobbs allegedly fired at officers before fleeing out the back of the home; he was later captured after being wounded by return fire.

Inside the home, authorities found Carol Blair’s body in a bedroom, curled in a fetal position with three gunshot wounds to the back of the head. Billy Blair was found on his back in the kitchen with three gunshot wounds to the face.

In an incident report obtained by media outlets, the Simpson County Sheriff’s Department stated: “Deputies and Investigators believe the suspect could be a troubled juvenile known to us as Cordarius Hobbs who is also suspected of many other home burglaries as well as auto theft in this immediate area.”

Hobbs faces two counts of capital murder, one count of burglary, and approximately 10 additional felony charges, including multiple counts of aggravated assault on law enforcement officers and aggravated assault on persons over 65. A judge has denied bond. He is being held in the Rankin County Jail.

Hobbs’ grandfather, Billy Newsome, has publicly questioned the allegations, asking why his grandson would rob people he worked for and suggesting the evidence “just ain’t adding up.” Defense attorney Zachary Vaugh has argued there is a lack of direct forensic evidence linking the teen to the shootings and that no one identified him at the time of the gunfire.

The case remains ongoing as the community mourns the loss of the Blairs, who were described as kind, faithful, and integral members of their church and neighborhood.
