Kaylee Hottle, the young deaf actress who brought warmth and quiet strength to the role of Jia in the Monsterverse films, has died. She was 18.

Hottle passed away on July 21, 2026, following a single-vehicle car accident in the Frederick area of Maryland. Her father, Joshua Hottle, confirmed the news, and the cause of death was later ruled as multiple blunt force injuries from the crash.

Born into an all-deaf family, Hottle made a lasting impression as Jia, the orphaned Iwi girl who forms a deep, wordless bond with Kong through sign language. She first appeared in Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) and returned in the 2024 sequel Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. Her performance stood out for its sincerity and emotional clarity, introducing many audiences to a deaf character portrayed with authenticity by a deaf actor.

Beyond the screen, Hottle was a senior at the Texas School for the Deaf in Austin, where she was remembered as a bright student and dual-sport athlete. The school shared a statement of profound sadness, noting the significant impact her loss would have on the community.
