SHOULD ALBERTANS GET A FAIRER RETURN ON THEIR CPP CONTRIBUTIONS?
Alberta has one of the youngest and highest-earning workforces in Canada.
That means Albertans have historically contributed more to the Canada Pension Plan than the benefits paid to Alberta residents.
Supporters of an Alberta Pension Plan say this creates an opportunity.
A provincial pension plan could potentially keep more of those contributions within Alberta.
It could also mean lower contribution rates for workers while maintaining comparable retirement benefits.
But there is an important question that cannot be ignored.
Would an Alberta-only plan remain equally strong as Alberta’s population ages and workers move in and out of the province?
The current CPP provides benefits based on individual contribution and earnings histories, regardless of where someone eventually retires.
Any Alberta Pension Plan would therefore need strong protections for workers, retirees, and people who move between provinces.
The goal should not simply be to create a different pension system.
The goal should be to ensure Albertans receive secure retirement benefits at a fair cost.
If an Alberta plan could guarantee equal or better benefits while lowering contributions, should Albertans have the right to choose it?
Or is the strength and stability of a national pension plan more important?
The question is bigger than politics.
It is about your paycheque, your retirement, and the money you contribute throughout your working life.
Should Albertans get a fair return on their own contributions?
