OKLAHOMA CITY — For most fathers, walking a daughter down the aisle is one of those moments imagined years in advance — a slow walk, a trembling smile, a final squeeze of the hand before letting her begin a new chapter.

For Michael Bunce, however, that simple dream suddenly seemed as though it might never happen.

Michael was being treated at OU Health in Oklahoma City for a complex pulmonary illness. His condition was serious, and as his health declined, one thought weighed heavily on his heart: his daughter Shana was preparing to get married, and he feared he would not be there beside her.

Critical care nurse Julie Price noticed something about her patient. Despite everything he was going through, Michael was often smiling. But whenever the conversation turned to his daughter’s wedding, his emotions changed.

He wanted desperately to see Shana become a bride.

Instead of waiting for the wedding Michael might not be healthy enough to attend, they brought the wedding to him.

The hospital chapel was transformed into a ceremony space. An outdoor garden area was prepared for a reception. Family members and hospital employees gathered together, not simply as witnesses to a marriage, but as witnesses to a father’s wish coming true.

On July 2, 2026, Shana Bunce and her now-husband, Justin, exchanged vows at OU Health.

It wasn’t the wedding they had originally imagined.

But suddenly, all the details that normally seem so important — the location, the decorations, the perfect schedule — mattered far less than one thing:

Her father was there.

Shana later summed it up simply: it wasn’t what they had planned, but they felt blessed.

Michael was taken through the hospital halls in a wheelchair as loved ones and staff waited for the ceremony.
