More than 19 years after Madeleine McCann vanished from a holiday apartment in Portugal, one of the world’s most closely followed missing-child cases remains unresolved. Now, with investigations still active across three countries and renewed attention surrounding the principal German suspect, the question that has haunted millions remains the same: what happened to Madeleine?

Madeleine was three years old when she disappeared from apartment 5A of the Ocean Club resort in Praia da Luz, Portugal, on the evening of May 3, 2007. Her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, had been dining with friends at a nearby restaurant while Madeleine and her younger twin siblings slept inside the apartment. When Kate returned to check on the children, Madeleine was gone. More than 7,000 days later, investigators have still not established publicly what happened to her or where she is.

The case remains active. The Metropolitan Police confirmed on its current Operation Grange page that British detectives continue to work with law-enforcement agencies in Portugal and Germany. The Home Office also continues to fund the British investigation, which began as a review in 2011 before becoming a full investigation in 2013.

Christian Brückner Remains at the Center of the Investigation

A major focus continues to be Christian Brückner, the German man first publicly identified by German prosecutors as a suspect in 2020. Brückner previously lived in Portugal and spent time in the Algarve region. German authorities continue to regard him as a suspect in Madeleine’s disappearance, but an important fact remains unchanged: he has never been charged in connection with the Madeleine McCann case.

Brückner was released from a German prison in September 2025 after completing a seven-year sentence connected to the rape of an elderly woman in Portugal — a conviction unrelated to Madeleine’s disappearance. His release intensified questions about whether prosecutors had gathered enough evidence to bring a case against him over Madeleine. So far, no such charge has followed.

Fresh attention returned to Brückner in July 2026 when German authorities confirmed that he was the subject of a separate police investigation in Kiel. Police said proceedings had been opened following an incident on June 6 in which an officer was allegedly injured. According to AFP, authorities are investigating allegations involving resistance or a physical confrontation with law-enforcement officers. Brückner’s lawyer disputed the police response to the incident. Crucially, however, this investigation is not connected to Madeleine’s disappearance and does not represent new evidence in her case.

Searches Continue — But No Confirmed Breakthrough

Investigators have repeatedly returned to Portugal searching for evidence. One of the most significant recent operations took place in June 2025, when German and Portuguese authorities conducted a new search connected to the investigation. After the operation concluded, the Braunschweig Public Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that the search had ended as planned but said it could not disclose the results of the investigative measures.

More recently, reports in the British press have claimed that Scotland Yard has been examining digital files and other material potentially relevant to Brückner. El País, in an August 12, 2026 review of the case, noted those reports while emphasizing that investigators have still not produced conclusive evidence establishing his involvement.

That distinction is critical. Despite years of searches, witness interviews, forensic examinations and international cooperation, authorities have not announced a definitive forensic breakthrough, Madeleine has not been found, and no one has been convicted or charged over her disappearance.

Madeleine’s Family Has Not Given Up

Kate and Gerry McCann continue to maintain the Find Madeleine campaign. In their December 2025 message, they said the investigation was continuing and that the search for information and justice was “far from over.” Their official website remained active in 2026, with the family continuing to thank supporters who have stood beside them through nearly two decades of uncertainty.

The passage of time has transformed Madeleine’s disappearance into one of the longest-running and most recognizable missing-person investigations in modern history. Yet behind the international headlines is a painfully simple reality: a little girl disappeared, her family has spent more than 19 years waiting for answers, and investigators still cannot publicly explain what happened inside or around apartment 5A that night.

As of August 13, 2026, the case remains open. Christian Brückner remains a key suspect but has not been charged in connection with Madeleine. British, German and Portuguese investigators continue their work, and no verified evidence has emerged to support online claims that Madeleine has been found or that the mystery has finally been solved.
