The Jamie Varley case may have reached a courtroom conclusion, but questions surrounding the evidence and the events leading up to Preston Davey’s death continue to attract intense attention.

Varley was convicted at Preston Crown Court of murdering 13-month-old Preston Davey, along with multiple offences involving child cruelty and sexual abuse. He was subsequently sentenced to a whole-life order, meaning he is expected to remain in prison for the rest of his life.

But as the details of the case continue to be examined, attention is now turning to evidence that was presented during the trial — and whether any overlooked detail could eventually become relevant to an appeal or further legal proceedings.

One of the most significant parts of the prosecution case involved material recovered from Varley’s mobile phone.

The jury heard evidence concerning videos and photographs involving Preston, as well as information recovered from the device that prosecutors said helped establish what happened during the final period of the baby’s life.

Other evidence presented at trial included CCTV footage from the hospital and statements about what Varley said immediately after Preston was brought to hospital.

The prosecution argued that the combined evidence contradicted Varley’s account of events.
