UTAH: TEENAGE SON ACCUSED OF KILLING HIS 44-YEAR-OLD MOTHER AND 8-YEAR-OLD BROTHER — MORE THAN A YEAR LATER, POLICE MADE AN ARREST
A heartbreaking case in Saratoga Springs, Utah, has taken a major turn after authorities arrested the teenage son of Jessica Orton Lyman, 44, in connection with the deaths of Jessica and her young son, Eli Painter, 8.
On March 28, 2025, Jessica’s 17-year-old daughter returned home and discovered her mother and Eli critically injured inside a bedroom. Eli died at the scene, while Jessica was taken to a hospital and later died from her injuries.
Jessica’s other son, who was 15 at the time, told investigators he had been asleep and had not heard anything. Police later said the investigation uncovered evidence including .22-caliber shell casings, gunshot residue, surveillance footage, digital records and unusual handwritten notes, one of which contained the chilling words, “This is a murder story.”
After an investigation lasting more than a year and involving the FBI, authorities arrested the boy in August 2026, when he was 16, on allegations involving two counts of first-degree murder. Because he is a juvenile, his identity has not been publicly released.
Investigators have examined reported tension between the teenager and his mother, including hostile messages allegedly sent before the deaths, but authorities have not publicly established a definitive motive, and the allegations have not yet been proven in court.
Jessica should be remembered as a mother whose life meant far more than this tragedy, while Eli was only eight years old with an entire future still ahead of him. May they both be remembered with love, and may their grieving family find strength as the legal process continues.
Police finally made an arrest — but the strange note, forensic evidence and one comment allegedly made before officers revealed how the victims were injured have left even more questions.
