But what makes these photos even harder to look at is knowing this isn’t Lucero’s first fight with cancer.
It isn’t even her second.
This little Texas girl is fighting leukemia for the third time.
Her mom, Paola, reached out to me from Houston asking for something she desperately wants surrounding her daughter right now: prayer.
Lucero was just 3 years old when she was diagnosed with B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia in December 2022.
She fought it.
Then in September 2025, her mom says the leukemia came back. Lucero underwent CAR-T cell therapy, only for her family to receive devastating news again this summer.
On June 23rd, 2026, Lucero relapsed for a second time.
Now look at her face in these photos.
It breaks your heart.
Lucero’s family has traveled from Laredo to Houston, where her mom says they had their first appointment at MD Anderson.
Radiation to Lucero’s eye is scheduled to begin Thursday.
On August 27th, Paola says her daughter will be admitted to Texas Children’s Hospital to begin intensive chemotherapy in preparation for a bone marrow transplant. She says additional radiation is planned for August 30.
And through all of it, her mom keeps coming back to the same request.
“Prayers please.”
So that’s what I’m asking from all of you.
Please pray for this little girl who has already fought cancer three times. Pray that the radiation and chemotherapy do exactly what doctors need them to do.
Pray for a successful bone marrow transplant, for strength when Lucero is hurting or scared, and for her mom as she watches her child go through all of this again.
Lucero has had to fight long enough.
Let’s surround this little girl from Laredo with so many prayers that her family can feel everyone standing beside them all the way from this hospital room to the day they finally get to take her home.
