I realized the other day that it’s been a little while since I’ve given an update on Scarlett.
Usually, no news is good news. In Scarlett’s case, there isn’t a huge amount to report—but there are a few things her family is watching closely.
Recently, they’ve been trying some **new dressings** on Scarlett’s leg and arm, along with a new ointment. There is also an area of swelling that her doctors are monitoring.
The wound-care team at Methodist recommended trying a silver-containing dressing called **Aquacel AG**. Scarlett had previously been using another dressing, but her family wasn’t sure how much it was helping beyond absorbing drainage.
They were eventually able to get the Aquacel AG dressing recommended by the wound-care team and have now been using it again for a few days. The goal is to see whether it helps with the bacteria affecting her wounds.
They also tried a newer ointment that could potentially have replaced her current gentamicin treatment. Unfortunately, Scarlett developed redness and what appeared to be a reaction after using it.
Because her family didn’t want to risk making things worse, they stopped the new ointment and returned to the previous treatment.
Another concern is some **swelling around Scarlett’s right groin area** that appeared over the past week.
Her pediatrician examined her but wasn’t certain of the cause. One possibility is an infection beneath the skin, while another is swelling or infection involving a nearby lymph node.
For now, Scarlett has been started on **amoxicillin** and will follow up with her surgeon next Tuesday.
That appointment will also include checking her **G-tube site** and making sure it is continuing to heal properly.
Despite all of these little setbacks and uncertainties, the biggest update is this:
**Scarlett is still doing well overall. **
There are good days and bad days, but her family continues taking everything one day at a time.
Her parents, myself and Mariah, say they are still amazed by how many people recognize Scarlett, follow her story, and ask about her when they see them in public.
