On May 3, 2020, an ordinary day in Knottingley, West Yorkshire, suddenly became a moment of life and death.

Fifteen-month-old Reggie Johnson had somehow slipped away from home and ended up in a nearby canal. In a terrifying turn of events, the toddler fell into the water and disappeared beneath the surface.

Nearby was 15-year-old Ryley Ferguson.

When Ryley realized that a little child was drowning, he did not stop to think about his own safety. He quickly took off his shoes and coat and jumped straight into the cold canal.

Ryley swam toward the spot where Reggie had disappeared. By the time he reached him, the little boy had already sunk to the bottom. With no guarantee that he would be able to find or rescue him, Ryley searched underwater, found Reggie, and pulled him back to the surface.

He then brought the toddler toward the bank, where two men nearby helped lift the child out of the water.

Thankfully, Reggie survived.

What makes this story even more remarkable is what happened afterward.

Ryley’s bravery was widely praised, and he received recognition for his actions, including becoming a finalist for an Amplifon Awards for Brave Britons honor. But despite the attention, Ryley remained remarkably humble.

When people raised money for him as a gesture of appreciation, he reportedly wanted the money to be donated to the NHS instead.

Think about that for a moment.

He was only 15 years old.

At an age when most teenagers are worrying about school, friends, hobbies, and ordinary everyday life, Ryley found himself facing a situation where a child’s life was in danger. He could have been afraid. He could have waited for someone older or more experienced to help.

Instead, he acted.

He did not jump into that canal because he expected recognition. He did not do it because he wanted money or praise. He saw a child in danger and decided that someone had to try.

And when people later wanted to reward him, he chose to give back.

Ryley later said that he simply did what anyone else would do. But sometimes, what seems “simple” is actually extraordinary.

Courage is not the absence of fear. It is choosing to do the right thing even when you are afraid.

At just 15, Ryley Ferguson reminded the world that heroes do not always wear uniforms or carry titles. Sometimes, they are simply young people with enough courage to jump into the water when someone else needs help.
