On a quiet day in Knottingley, West Yorkshire, a terrifying accident unfolded that could have ended in tragedy.

It was May 3, 2020. Fifteen-month-old Reggie Johnson had somehow wandered away from his home and found his way to a nearby canal. Before anyone could stop him, the toddler ended up in the water.

Then, everything changed.

Fifteen-year-old Ryley Ferguson was nearby when he noticed what was happening. He saw a tiny child struggling in the canal and realized that Reggie had disappeared beneath the surface.

There was no time to wait.

Ryley immediately took off his shoes and coat and jumped into the canal.

He was only 15 years old. He was not a trained rescue worker. He had no special equipment. He simply saw a child in danger and knew he had to try.

Yet Ryley did not seem interested in becoming famous.

When people raised money for him as a way of thanking him for his bravery, he reportedly wanted the money donated to the NHS.

He had risked his own life to save a child—and when people wanted to reward him, he chose to give something back to others.

Ryley later described his actions simply, saying he did what anyone else would do.

But not everyone would.

At 15, he could have been frightened. He could have waited for an adult. He could have walked away and hoped someone else would intervene.

Instead, he jumped.

That single decision changed the course of a little boy’s life.

We often imagine heroes as extraordinary people with extraordinary abilities. But sometimes, a hero is simply an ordinary person who refuses to stand by when someone needs help.
