When Christina Fisher gave birth to her daughter, Abigail Lynn, in January 2016, she never imagined that the adoption plan she had carefully arranged would suddenly fall apart.

Before Abigail was born, Fisher had made the difficult decision to place her baby for adoption. At the time, she was struggling financially and did not believe she was in a position to raise another child on her own. She already had an older daughter and had worked with an adoption agency to find a family willing to give Abigail a stable home.

But everything changed when Abigail was born.

On January 11, 2016, Abigail was diagnosed with Treacher Collins syndrome, a rare genetic condition that affects the development of facial bones and tissues. The condition can affect features such as the jaw, cheekbones, ears and eyes. According to reports, the condition had not been detected during Fisher’s prenatal testing.

The prospective adoptive mother was at the hospital when Abigail was born. Fisher later said that after seeing the newborn, the woman left the hospital in tears and the adoption did not move forward. The adoption agency subsequently informed Fisher that the prospective parents had withdrawn from the arrangement.

For Fisher, the heartbreaking moment became a turning point.

Although she had originally believed another family could provide Abigail with a better future, she decided to keep her daughter and raise her herself.

“I was not fully prepared for her, but now I can no longer see my life without either one of my daughters,” Fisher said at the time.

The decision was not an easy one. Fisher was suddenly responsible for caring for a baby who could require additional medical attention, including possible reconstructive procedures as she grew. Yet she remained determined to give Abigail the love and support she needed. Reports also said that friends, family members and strangers helped Fisher with basic expenses while she cared for her daughter.

The story later attracted widespread attention after photographer Oksana Peery offered to photograph Christina and Abigail. The resulting images captured quiet, affectionate moments between mother and daughter and helped share their story with a much wider audience.

Abigail’s story is ultimately about much more than a failed adoption.

It is about a mother who faced an unexpected situation and chose to stand beside her child. It is also a reminder that a medical diagnosis or a difference in appearance does not determine a person’s value, potential or ability to be loved.

For Christina, Abigail was never defined by her condition. She was simply her daughter — a child she loved deeply and could no longer imagine her life without.
