In January 2019, three-year-old Casey Hathaway disappeared while playing outside his great-grandmother’s home in Ernul, North Carolina. What followed was a desperate search through cold, rain-soaked woodland—and an astonishing rescue that left investigators and the public with one unanswered question: How did such a young child survive?

Casey vanished on January 22, 2019, while playing with two other children. After his family searched for about 45 minutes without finding him, authorities were called. A massive search operation followed, involving hundreds of volunteers and professional rescuers, helicopters, drones, K-9 teams and other emergency personnel.

A Race Against the Cold

The conditions quickly became a major concern.

Temperatures dropped into the 20s Fahrenheit (around -7°C to -1°C), while heavy rain and strong winds made the search increasingly difficult. At one point, authorities asked volunteers to stay away because the weather had become too dangerous.

The search covered a large area of wooded terrain, including areas of thick vegetation and standing water. More than 48 hours passed before rescuers finally received the breakthrough they had been desperately waiting for.

Then, on the evening of January 24, someone reported hearing what sounded like a child crying.

Emergency personnel followed the sound into the woods.

“Momma!”

EMS Captain Shane Grier and other rescuers eventually found Casey approximately 40–50 yards (about 36–46 meters) into the woods, tangled in thorny vegetation.

He was soaking wet, cold and had some scratches—but he was alive.

Grier later recalled hearing the little boy call for his mother. Rescuers had to work through the dense vegetation to reach him and bring him out.

Casey was immediately taken to CarolinaEast Medical Center for evaluation. Doctors found him in surprisingly good condition considering what he had endured.

For his family and the hundreds of people who had spent days searching, the rescue was an extraordinary moment of relief.

Then Casey Told Them About a Bear

After being rescued, Casey reportedly told his family and authorities that he had spent time with a bear while he was lost.

Craven County Sheriff Chip Hughes confirmed that the boy said he had a “friend in the woods” that was a bear. Casey’s aunt, Breanna Hathaway, later wrote that the child said he had “hung out with a bear for two days.”

The statement immediately captured public attention.

Was there really a bear?

Or was Casey, only three years old and having just experienced an extremely frightening ordeal, describing something from his imagination?

There was never enough evidence to conclusively answer the question.

A Mystery That May Never Be Solved

North Carolina is home to a substantial population of American black bears, so encountering one in the general region was not impossible. Wildlife experts acknowledged that Casey could potentially have seen a bear.

However, experts also questioned the idea that a wild bear would deliberately protect or care for a lost child.

Bear researcher Chris Servheen told The Guardian that such behavior would be highly unusual and suggested that the story was more likely the product of a young child’s imagination. Another wildlife expert interviewed by Inside Edition similarly said that while Casey could have seen a bear, it was much less clear that the animal would have intentionally protected him.

There was also a cultural detail that some reports noted: Casey was familiar with “Masha and the Bear,” a popular children’s animated series. That does not prove his account was imaginary, but it offered one possible explanation for how a bear might have entered his story.

The Real Miracle Was His Survival

Whatever happened during those two nights remains unknown.

What is certain is that Casey survived more than 48 hours outdoors as a three-year-old while exposed to freezing temperatures, rain and difficult terrain.

Sheriff Hughes called Casey a “survivor,” emphasizing how extraordinary it was that such a small child remained alive under those conditions.

His rescue became a story of hope for a community that had spent two days fearing the worst. The image of a tiny boy being carried out of the cold woods and reunited with his family became the defining moment of the case.

And the mysterious bear became a part of the story that has never been completely explained.

Perhaps Casey truly encountered an animal.

Perhaps he imagined a companion while alone and frightened.

Or perhaps the truth lies somewhere between those possibilities.

Whatever the answer, one fact remains undeniable: a three-year-old boy disappeared into a cold, wet forest—and came home alive.
