The disappearance of Madeleine McCann has remained one of the world’s most haunting mysteries for almost 20 years. But as the investigation moves deeper into 2026, attention is once again turning toward Christian Brückner — the German man prosecutors have long regarded as the leading suspect in the case.

Brückner is not currently charged with Madeleine’s disappearance, and he has denied involvement. Yet his name continues to dominate the investigation, particularly after German authorities reportedly transferred a new dossier of information to British investigators.

The material reportedly delivered to Scotland Yard is believed to contain information gathered during German investigations into Brückner. Reports have described the dossier as potentially crucial, although British police have not publicly confirmed that it contains a decisive piece of evidence. The Metropolitan Police has confirmed that Operation Grange remains active and that British officers continue to work with German and Portuguese authorities.

The timing is significant.

Madeleine disappeared from the family’s holiday apartment in Praia da Luz on May 3, 2007. She was only three years old. Her disappearance triggered a massive international search and generated years of investigations across Portugal, Britain and Germany.

For years, investigators considered numerous possibilities. But in 2020, German prosecutors publicly identified Brückner as a suspect and said they believed Madeleine had been killed. The German investigation has never resulted in a formal charge against him in connection with Madeleine.

Brückner’s legal position has therefore remained unusual. He is a central suspect in one of Europe’s most famous missing-child cases, yet he has not been placed on trial for Madeleine’s disappearance.

Now another courtroom battle is approaching.

Germany’s Federal Court of Justice is expected to examine an appeal involving Brückner’s acquittal on five sexual-offence charges from a separate case. The Braunschweig regional court acquitted him in October 2024 after finding that there was not enough evidence for conviction. Prosecutors appealed, and the Federal Court of Justice has indicated that a hearing is expected in January 2027.

Although the proceedings do not concern Madeleine directly, the outcome could have major implications for Brückner’s legal circumstances.

The development has attracted renewed attention because prosecutors had sought a lengthy prison sentence in the earlier case. The appeal now gives Germany’s highest criminal court an opportunity to examine whether legal errors occurred in the previous proceedings.

At the same time, British investigators are continuing to examine the Madeleine case independently.

Scotland Yard’s Operation Grange has been active since 2011 and has continued working with authorities in Portugal and Germany. British police have previously explored the possibility of bringing Brückner to Britain for questioning or potential proceedings, although the legal route remains complicated.

The situation is particularly striking because Brückner was released from German prison in September 2025 after serving a sentence for a separate rape committed in Portugal. He remains a suspect in the Madeleine investigation despite having completed that sentence. Reuters confirmed at the time that German police continued to regard him as a suspect in Madeleine’s disappearance.

For investigators, the challenge remains the same: suspicion is not enough.

A successful prosecution would require evidence capable of meeting the relevant legal standard. And despite years of investigation, Madeleine’s body has never been found and no court has determined what happened to her.

That leaves the case suspended between suspicion and proof.

The new dossier could provide investigators with additional material to examine. The upcoming German appeal could create another major legal development. And Operation Grange remains active.

But for the McCann family, nearly 20 years have passed without the answer they have wanted most.

Where is Madeleine?

Until investigators can answer that question with evidence that survives scrutiny in court, the mystery remains open.
