In October 1995, Brielle and Kyrie Jackson were born twelve weeks premature at The Medical Center of Central Massachusetts, each weighing just about two pounds. Hospital policy required that they be kept in separate incubators to reduce the risk of infection, and Kyrie, the slightly larger twin, adapted well to life outside the womb.
Brielle, however, did not. She struggled with breathing difficulties, an unstable heart rate, and critically low oxygen levels. By November 12, her condition had taken a terrifying turn: her skin turned bluish-gray, her heart rate spiked, and medical staff exhausted every conventional treatment—with no success.
That was when nurse Gayle Kasparian made a decisive choice. She had heard about a practice called “co-bedding” being used in Europe, though it was not yet standard in the U.S. With few options left and the frightened parents’ permission, she placed Brielle in the incubator with Kyrie for the first time since birth.
The effect was immediate. Brielle snuggled against her sister and began to calm, her blood-oxygen levels rising sharply as her breathing eased. As she drifted into sleep, Kyrie wrapped her tiny arm around her struggling sister, and within moments, Brielle’s heart rate stabilized, her temperature normalized, and her natural color returned.
That powerful image—Kyrie’s arm draped protectively over Brielle—became known as “The Rescuing Hug.” When it appeared in Life magazine and Reader’s Digest in 1996, it sparked a widespread shift toward co-bedding for premature multiples. At that hospital alone, over one hundred sets of twins were later co-bedded, with zero cases of infection.
The twins went home healthy before Christmas and continued sleeping together for years. One nurse’s willingness to try something unconventional not only saved a life—it fundamentally changed how hospitals care for premature babies.
